But what type of collagen supplement is best for you, and how should you take collagen? Read on for ways that collagen can enhance your health, the four different ways to take collagen (with benefits and drawbacks of each, and typically doses for maximum results.

When and How to Use Keto Collagen

Health Benefits Of Collagen

Collagen provides the best protein for your skin, hair, joints, and other soft tissue. That’s why it’s quickly becoming one of the most popular supplements on the planet.

The word collagen comes from Greek roots that literally mean “glue-producing.” Collagen makes up 25% of your body’s protein content (making it the most abundant protein in your body), and is helpful in soft tissue repair.

Many people wonder what the difference is between collagen and gelatin. Collagen breaks down into gelatin, so they are the same amino acids with different chemical structures. Think of them as the same tool but with different packaging.

Collagen aids in[*][*][*][*]:

  • Energy production
  • Building healthy DNA
  • Supporting blood vessels
  • Supporting joint health and managing joint pain and osteoarthritis
  • Supporting cartilage, ligaments, bone health, and connective tissue
  • Skin hydration and skin elasticity
  • Nails growth and strength
  • Gut health

How To Take Collagen

By far, the most popular way to take collagen is in powder form. However, most people don’t realize that there are actually several different forms of collagen available. Below are the four ways you can incorporate collagen into your supplement regimen:

When and How to Use Keto Collagen

Collagen Powder

Collagen powder is the most popular way to take collagen for a good reason — it’s easily incorporated into foods and beverages, and it has a very mild flavor (practically none at all). You can also find the Collagen Powder in our Perfect Keto Starter Kit.

Another benefit of powder is that many manufacturers will add other nutrients to collagen powder due to the easily modifiable format. MCTs make an excellent addition to collagen powder, especially for a keto dieter, due to their ability to provide quick energy and a smooth and creamy texture. In addition, other nutrients like vitamin C can be added that support collagen production.

In addition, collagen powder may come in various flavors, making it even more versatile and easy to add to different foods and beverages.

When looking for collagen powder, always keep an eye out for collagen peptides or “hydrolyzed powder.” When collagen goes through hydrolysis, a molecule of water is added to break down the collagen and make it more readily absorbable. For this reason, hydrolyzed collagen is more bioavailable than other forms of collagen — meaning you get more collagen bang for your buck[*].

One potential drawback of collagen powder is that you will need to take the time to incorporate the powder into your diet. If you aren’t already in the habit of adding collagen to your foods or beverages, it may take a little while before you get consistent. In addition, although most people hardly notice the addition of collagen powder to their meals due to how readily it dissolves in liquid, some people may have an aversion.

How To Take Collagen Powder

You can add collagen powder to almost any liquid or semi-liquid meal. There are troves of recipes that include collagen, and it’s easy to come up with your own. Many people choose to add a scoop of collagen to their morning coffee or latte. You can also easily incorporate it into smoothies as a protein powder, or soups, stews, oatmeal (or keto oatmeal), or any other liquid or semi-liquid medium.

The flavored collagens can make an excellent choice if you’re looking for extra flavor in smoothies, while flavorless collagen is great for more savory dishes like soup.

Collagen Capsules

Collagen capsules are just collagen powder that’s been put into capsules for ease of use. Many people opt for collagen capsules when they’re traveling or if they have difficulty making time in their day for collagen powder.

If you’re not a big fan of smoothies or adding powders to your drinks, collagen capsules may be the way to go — it doesn’t get much easier than simply swallowing a pill.

With that being said, there is one significant drawback to collagen capsules, and that’s dosage. Due to the fact that you can only cram a small amount of collagen into a capsule, it makes it a lot more challenging to get a significant amount of collagen into your diet when you take it in cap form. To get the same amount of collagen from a capsule as you would in powder form, you may have to take up to ten caps daily.

Some people have a hard time with pills, so capsules can be extra challenging if you fall under that category.

How To Take Collagen Capsules

To take collagen capsules, simply choose the dosage you would like and gulp them down with some water or liquid of choice.

Liquid Collagen

Liquid collagen is also available and can come in either a condensed (shot-like) form or in a larger, more diluted form. Several companies have come out with liquid collagen drinks to make getting collagen into your diet easier without messing with powders or pills.

One thing to be aware of with liquid collagen is the potential for low-quality ingredients being added to the mix. As with most packaged foods, be aware of artificial sweeteners, chemicals, and preservatives.

Another downside to liquid collagen is that you won’t necessarily get to choose your dose. Furthermore, it can be a bit cumbersome to rely on a daily packaged beverage if you want to make collagen a part of your supplement routine. It’s considerably easier to store a tub of powdered collagen or a bottle of capsules than a package of liquid collagen bottles.

How To Take Collagen Liquid

To take liquid collagen, you can either drink the whole bottle or collagen shot or divide it into doses. If you want to branch out and use these liquids in formats like smoothies or other beverages, you can also feel free to do so.

Collagen Injections

Collagen injections are also available, although they are more specifically designed to support skin health instead of offering collagen support to your joints, bones, and other tissues.

Also referred to as “dermal fillers,” injectable collagen can be used in skincare to improve the appearance of wrinkles on your face and give you a more youthful, glowing complexion. If your primary reason for including collagen in your diet is to support skin health, collagen injections may be an option for you.

Although collagen fillers can give you immediate results, there are some potential side effects of using collagen in this way. First, fillers are injectables which means that if you don’t like needles (who does?), this could be a rather unpleasant experience. Furthermore, some people find that they have an allergic reaction to collagen fillers and end up with redness, inflammation, and potential scarring.

Dermal fillers either come from bovine collagen, or they can be harvested from your own skin, sent to a lab, and then re-injected into your body in the desired area.

How To Take Collagen Injections

Unlike the other three options, collagen injections are not offered over the counter. If you’re interested in collagen injections, you would need to work with a licensed healthcare practitioner such as a dermatologist or nurse practitioner that can provide the injections for you.

What’s a Typical Dose Of Collagen?

This depends on you and your goals. Many people start with half a scoop and increase from there. You can experiment with 0.5-3 scoops per day, depending on how much you’re exercising, your weight-loss or weight-gain goals, or if you’re traveling and don’t have easy access to healthy options.

In general, the sweet spot tends to be between 10 and 20 grams of collagen per day.

The Takeaway

Determining the best way for you to incorporate collagen into your life is up to you, but many people choose to go with collagen powder due to the ease of use and the mild taste. Collagen protein powder can also be taken on an empty stomach with no problem.

When choosing a collagen supplement, regardless of the format, it’s always important to focus on quality. When doing your research, look for grass-fed bovine that’s been hydrolyzed; this will show up as “collagen hydrolysate” or “hydrolyzed collagen” in the ingredients list. Marine collagen is also becoming popular, but it’s not as well researched as bovine.

You may also want to keep an eye on the types of collagen that your supplement provides. The form of collagen you take is just as important as the quality. With this in mind, the most well-researched options are type I and type III.

If you’re burnt out on dietary supplements and collagen products, you can also find collagen in food sources like bone broth, but the amount of collagen you’ll get in each serving won’t be as consistent or robust.

  1. Hi
I would like to know how to order more Keto Collagen, I’m running out and I really like your product but it seems to be out of stock.
    Thank you

  2. HI there,
I already use the perfect keto base religiously, however would like to include this into my diet (especially in the morning pre run). Do the two work together? Whats the difference between the two?

    1. Hello Ria! Perfect Keto Base contains the combination of beta-hydroxybutyrate ketone bodies which provides immediate and lasting fuel to the entire body – including the muscles and the brain. On the other hand, the combination of grass-fed collagen and MCT powder in Keto Collagen provides a protein boost for connective tissues, skin, hair, nails and joints.

  3. I usually combine a scoop of KETO base with a scoop of MCT oil powder in 16 oz of water for my morning pick me up drink. I bought the Keto collagen. Does it contain MCT oil powder? Should I mix all 3 in my drink or should I skip the MCT oil powder?

    1. Hi Carol! Yes, you can skip taking MCT since Keto Collagen contains MCT Oil Powder which raises blood ketone levels.

  4. Please make a version without Stevia!! <3
Not too many products out there like this one and I think it would sell better without stevia and/or unflavored!

  5. Should I use the keto base + the keto collagen, or is the keto Collagen sufficient. If both, when would I take each, or mix them?

    1. Hi ! Perfect Keto Base is made from high-quality beta hydroxy-butyrate (BHB) which makes it easier to enter a state ketosis. While the combination of grass-fed collagen and MCT powder in Keto Collagen, provides a protein boost for connective tissues, skin, hair, nails and joints.

You can mix and take it in the morning or between meals. You may also try it on an empty stomach or after eating a meal.

  6. I am loving my Keto Collagen! I add half a scoop to my morning cup of coffee (and I usually drink 2 cups = a full scoop total) almost every day. I just want to make sure that the temperature/heat of my coffee does not diminish the benefits of the collagen nor the mct’s. Please advise. Thanks! (*fingers crossed*). ;o)

    1. Hey Lindy, nope the heat will not diminish the benefits of the collagen or mct! Collagen is a protein – think about when you cook any other protein (eggs, meat, etc.)..cooking or heating protein may cause it’s structure to change (which is called “denaturing”) but this is a normal process and it will not change it’s nutritional value. Hope that helps!

  7. Hi, I’ve been (mostly) on and off an IF/Keto diet now for a few month and am a believer! I recently just purchased this product, hoping it’d aid in getting my body into Ketosis faster. Then I saw the Perfect Base lol, does this product also aid the body into Ketosis as the Base would?

    1. Hey Jovontae, yes this product will aid in your transition in a few different ways. It contains MCTs which have many benefits such as appetite suppression, increasing energy, and helping your body switch to using fat and ketones for fuel. Also, our product has a lower amount of protein and higher fat compared to almost all other protein powders out there that have very high amounts of protein and 0 fat (this isn’t good for keto because consuming large quantities of protein without any fat will raise your blood sugar and insulin – hindering your ability to produce and use ketones for fuel)..Plus collagen powder has tons of benefits in itself as well. This is actually my favorite product because it tastes delicious and cures any cravings for chocolate in my opinion. You can add it to unsweetened coconut or almond milk for a quick “chocolate milk” or add it to smoothies and other baking recipes..the possibilities are endless! Hope this helps!

    1. Hey Lauralee, it depends how much you’re using and how sensitive you are to protein. In my opinion it could go either way but you could definitely test your blood glucose and ketone levels a few times after consuming it and see what happens to get a better idea of how your body personally reacts. Also, it depends what type of fast you are referring too…check out this article for a comprehensive guide: http://perfectketo.com/types-intermittent-fasting/

  8. I drink my coffee with grass fed unsalted butter and MCT oil. Would this Keto collagen replace the oil and butter?

  9. I’m a new mom and nursing. Is this safe and a good idea for the baby? I’d love to try this in my decaf coffee. I’ve been eating low carb to lose the baby weight. Have recostarted your greens mix as well. Thanks!

  10. I’m trying to do the Keto diet and limit my protein to 19g it’s really difficult and I eat too much meat already. I need more veggies and fats, so I’m working on that. 3rd week of diet here – not losing much. I just bought peptides it said 9 g per serving. Is that right ?

    1. Hi Victoria! You can mix it in iced coffee with cream or mix it with MCT Oil Powder (This is great for creaminess and added healthy fats). You can blend it with almond milk or coconut cream as well. You can also try it with just ice water (heavily diluted).

  12. This is very helpful info, and I plan to pass it on to another friend who is interested in this topic.
Would you mind correcting a typo that occurs over and over in this article? MCIs should not have an apostrophe before the s. It’s a common mistake that happens when people use acronyms, but it’s a big typo that can be quite distracting. If you put an apostrophe there, it makes the acronym possessive, not plural. Sorry to point this out, but it will just make your article look more polished and professional when you clean this up. Thanks! Good info. 🙂

  13. I currently do the Keto coffee with butter, MCT oil, and cream. Can I add a scoop of Keto Collagen to this coffee blend or would it be too much MCT oil

  14. I recently made my first purchase of Exogenous Ketone Base along with Keto Collagen Protein. My question is when/how to use both products: Simultaneous, alternating throughout the day, or on completely separate days?

  15. Do I count the protein towards my daily allotment? Some say yes, and some say no. I can’t find a definitive answer.

    1. Hi Presley, you can mix the powders. You just have to be careful about how much the amount you put as too much may cause upset stomach.

  16. Hi! I have the same question as a few people on here- because you have to limit your daily protein intake on Keto, does the protein in the Perfect Keto Collagen powder count against your daily protein allowance?

  17. Hi,
I still can’t tell from all the above answers wether The Base and Collagen can be used together.
    Can they?
Please a simple “yes” or “no” is all I’m looking for.
    Thanks 🙂

    1. Hi Lena, you can mix the base and the collagen powder. You just have to be careful about how much the amount you put as too much of the powders may cause upset stomach.

  18. Hi! First off, this is BY FAR the best tasting powder EVER! I’m hooked! I don’t know how I will live if it’s ever discontinued! Second, Question.. can I use this in bulletproof coffee for intermittent fasting? The butter and oil just isnt very tasty but with a scoop of this chocolate collagen powder, it rocks! Goal is weight loss, so should I consume during my 8 hour eating window or is it safe to drink during fasting hours?
    Thanks- Amanda

    1. Hi Alexis, each scoop is equivalent to 2 cups of collagen from bone broth. Each serving comes with: 5 grams of MCT oil powder, 1.5 grams of acacia fiber, a prebiotic fiber for gut health with no effect on blood sugar and a 2:1 ratio of grass-fed collagen protein to MCT.

    1. Hi Mary, how you use it depends on your goals. You can mix it with smoothies, drinks, or coffee. You can also add it to your favorite recipes or replace your existing protein powder.

My question is the same as the Amanda that asked it earlier. Can someone please answer if the collagen breaks your fast.

    1. Hi Amanda, there are multiple dimensions to fasting so we really can’t provide a straightforward answer. Anything over 50 calories technically can break a fast, however, fat will not ruin the results of a fast for ketosis.

  20. I was wondering if I could use this product without being on the Keto diet? I just need the energy. So in short to use it as a boost or sort of a pre work out?

    Thanks!

  21. Hi…I purchased the “Perfect Keto” package which is the Base, MCT Oil Powder, and the KETO Collegen! Feeling a little over whelmed on when and how to use all 3 as a beginner! Should I use all 3 in a everyday routine, and if so how! Which can I mix together…another words I would love a suggested daily planner oe suggested menu I can follow as a schedule, especially since I’m a ” scheduled individual”. I always have 1 cup of coffee in the morning, love shakes & smoothies too. Thanks

    1. Hey Deb, you can basically mix those three with anything! Put it on your morning coffee, smoothie, or just plain water (whatever fit with your tastebuds). Be mindful of the amount you put in tho, to avoid any GI issues. You may head out to the recipe section if you want to experiment. You may also sign-up on the free keto kickstart here: http://perfectketo.com/keto-kickstart/

  22. I did not know how to use it (before I read up on it) and so just sprinkled it over my food or used it when cooking (dumped spoonsful into the skillet when sauteing onions!). Not really sure if heat destroyed it or not, but I didn’t seem to have any adverse effects.

  23. Good day. My husband and I don’t eat any form of meat; however, we do eat salmon, red snapper, tuna, eggs, sardines, mackerel, and several other sea water fish from the Caribbean Sea.
We would to try the Keto diet, but we are wondering how we would accomplish this with our current eating status. My question to you is how can we start the Keto diet?
Thank you for your assistance with this issue and assisting us on this journey.
